Types of Drug Treatment / Rehab

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

There are a bunch of different types of treatment available for addicts and alcoholics, and some of the terminology can be confusing. This list should help clarify types of treatment.

12 Step programs:
Twelve-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Cocaine Anonymous (CA) use a spiritual 12-step method for treatment. These programs have been around a long time and are well documented all over the internet.

Detox:
The body’s reaction to the removal of a substance it has become dependent on is called withdrawal. Withdrawal causes craving for more of the substance being removed. The period of time when the body is trying to overcome its addiction is called detoxifica-tion (detox). Detox is the first step in overcoming a substance addiction such as drugs or alcohol. Detox is a pertinent step for the patient is to be successfully rehabilitated.

Rehab:
Drug rehabs, or rehabilitation programs have a plan designed to get the alcoholic sober and the addict clean, then release them to go home and start going to AA/CA/NA meeting.

Residential Treatment:
Typically, a residence converted into a group living, with staff and transport to meetings. There are often meetings, group therapy and personal counseling available at a residential treatment facility. Clients live, eat and sleep at the residential treatment facility for a set amount of time.

Outpatient Treatment:
Clients do the same things as at Residential Treatment, but sleep at home. Outpatient treatment often follows an inpatient procedure.

Inpatient Addiction Treatment: Drug rehab programs include inpatient addiction treatment. This is a step in the program after detox where the patient participates in group, individual and family therapy.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment: Outpatient addiction treatment often follows inpatient addiction treatment once the patient is well enough to return home and maintain his or her recovery. Addiction treatment services are still available, but the patient is not required to stay at the drug rehab facility.

Family Addiction Treatment: Family addiction treatment is vital to a patient’s success in drug rehab programs. This is where most underlying issues of addiction are resolved.

Substance Abuse Recovery

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Recovery from substance abuse is a process. Some of the ingredients for the process:
1) Abstinence from the substance. This often requires a supervised detox procedure. Drug Rehabs or treatment facilities usually have policies for getting patients or clients detoxed and drug-free.

2) Recovery. Recovery is a whole other topic, because if just getting clean was enough to stay clean, there would be no drug rehab industry. Recovery has as many paths as there are people, but generally speaking, the 12-step process originally outlined in Alcoholics Anonymous seems to work well. The problem with most drug rehabs is that they release the clients back to their lives before they get a chance to really implement any recovery from the addiction or alcoholism that they went to rehab to get well from! Enter Transitional Housing, or Sober Living. Sober Living is a term for a Sober House, or Halfway House, or Transitional House, where clients can go after they graduate from treatment, but before they are ready to go back home. Sober Living has a more structured program than just going home, but it’s less structured than a rehab. It’s good to transition from rehab to recovery.

12 Step Recovery Meetings

12 Step Recovery Meetings

Our weekly meetings are open to invited guests, but are primarily for the residents who are interested in voicing issues with the house/community. Some of the residents are clean in Narcotics Anonymous, some in Alcoholics Anonymous, some go to both fellowships. The Garden Sober Living is not allied with either NA or AA, but we support our guests who choose to attend any 12-step meetings.

As an affordable alternative to staying in a high end sober house, The Garden is a laid back, healthy environment for people interested in community living arrangements. We are located Inglewood, just east of LAX on Manchester. The sobriety in West LA is famous around the world, and for a good reason. Sobriety is a celebration of life, and Los Angeles meetings are said by many to be among the biggest and best in the world.

Sharing a room takes some work, but the savings of money compared to renting an apartment and paying utilities goes a long way towards taking the edge off of that work. The work of sharing pays off in another way too, as most addicts and alcoholics are self-centered in the extreme. The sharing of facilities and learning to work together to solve problems and get along in a group environment is a reward in itself.

Transitional housing, as is provided at The Garden Sober Living, is often just the right thing for men who have graduated from a rehab, treatment center, prison or other program and are faced with getting along on the outside of that institution. With our low housing prices, and friendly community, this is a sober living that offers men a real chance at a new way of life.

Proud member of the Sober Living Network, Sober Living Coalition, we are not a chemical dependency treatment program, just a community of men staying clean and sober using 12 step principles.
